Asbestos Surveys

If you own, occupy or have management responsibilities for a building then you have a legal duty to manage asbestos within that premises. This is not a law to survey but it is a law to manage asbestos. To comply with Regulation 4 you need to manage asbestos but you will not be able to do that unless you know you have it. If you know you have it then you will need a management plan and a register.

To do this you will need to carry out an asbestos survey. Once a survey has been carried out and if needed then a responsible person can be appointed to manage the asbestos. Because asbestos was banned in 1999 it is a requirement to inspect a building if it was built before 2000. Any building built after that should not require an inspection.

There are two main types of survey. The management survey which is used to manage asbestos on a daily or monthly basis and then there is the pre refurbishment/demolition asbestos survey. There are slight variations on each so here is the list..............
